Maths

Our aim across Elston Hall Learning Trust (EHLT) is for all children to enjoy mathematics and have a secure and deep understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and procedures when they leave us to go to secondary school. We want children to see the mathematics that surrounds them every day and enjoy developing vital life skills in this subject.

As a school we follow the 2014 National Curriculum and cover the subjects and topics as outlined in the statutory guidance.

Kevin Pyrce has curriculum responsibility for maths and he can be contacted if you require further information.

I enjoy working with my maths partner because we

get to share ideas when solving problems. We can

support each other.

Parent Workshops

Many parents take an interest in their children's Maths learning and want to do more to help them. However, they can be puzzled by the methods and terms that we use, which may have changed since they were at school.

To assist the parents in Year 6 we held several after-school Maths Workshops with them in the Autumn term. In these, we looked at the school's calculation policy to see which methods have or haven't changed since they were at school. We saw the expectations that the National Curriculum has for the children in Year 6 and we looked at how we can support our children at home with their Maths learning.

In the Workshop we also saw the importance of the children having fluency with number facts and how we can support them with learning or consolidating these.

Bar Models

Bar models are pictorial representations of problems or concepts that can be used for any of the operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In word problems, they hold the huge benefit of helping children decide which operations to use or visualise problems. It is then up to the children to calculate the answer.

Number Day 2025

This annual campaign organised by the charity NSPCC encourages children to get involved in numbers–based activities. Children enjoyed maths games, solving fun puzzles and enjoyed learning about numbers during the day.  Mr Holmes from Elston Hall  hosted the Big Trust Maths Quiz at Elston Hall. Well done to all the children who took part.

Children explored area, they cut out 1 cm by 1 cm squares—each representing a square centimetre (cm²). They then used their squares to estimate the area of various objects around them.
