We are very much looking forward to the Spring term and the lovely learning opportunities that this term will bring!

In English, we will be concentrating on sentence construction, the use of simple punctuation (capital letters and full stops) and using phonic knowledge to spell words. Children will be encouraged throughout the year to verbally rehearse their ideas before writing them.

In Maths we will again be following the Maths Mastery scheme. We will begin to start learning to count in 5s. We will then be moving onto doubling/multiplication. Children will learn to do this skill through a variety of methods such as arrays, using repeated addition and by using a number line. In contrast to this as we get further into the Spring term children will also be learning to halve, so will be introduced to simple division problems. As ever, children will still be presented with opportunities to reflect upon learning that they have done throughout the Autumn term to further consolidate their mathematical knowledge.

In Science, children will learn about plants. Children will explore parts of plants by dissecting them and investigating the different parts.  The will explore what plants need to grow and we will be planting bulbs and seeds in the classroom so we can watch the grow.

For more details about our learning this term, please see the  Curriculum Overview.

Thematic

Our topic this term is ‘Unity in the Community’ which is all about our local community! This is an exciting new topic for children and teachers, and we can’t wait to get started!

PSHEe, PE, R.E and Science will be taught discreetly.

Reading and Phonics

Reading will continue to be a huge focus in Year 1; therefore, please continue to support your child’s reading at home daily. We remind you that children’s books need to be in school every day so that teachers can also listen to them read and help us to monitor their progress. This will also enable the books to be changed more regularly. However, we would still expect daily reading to happen at home. This will help to build your child’s confidence and the link between home and school. Any extra practise at home is always welcome! Your child will also bring home phonics books during the year. Please support your child by encouraging them to read the words using their phonics skills. Children may also have nonsense words to practise which are also important in helping them to read accurately. Phonics is particularly important during Year 1, as children are required to take a phonics test in the summer term, which consists of 40 words (real and nonsense) to read – we will have a parent meeting to discuss the phonics screening test in the spring term.

P.E

PE will be taught twice a week. This will be taught on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Please ensure that children wear their PE kit to school on these days. In the interests of safety, no jewellery, including earrings, should be worn on PE days.

It would also be appreciated if all uniform (including PE kit and pumps and water bottles) could be labelled with your child’s full name and class.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher at the end of the school day or via Class Dojos.

Thank you in anticipation of your continued support.

We have much excited for the Spring term and we look forward to a term packed full of learning and progress.
