The autumn term is always a busy time for children in Year 1 and we can’t wait to get back into the swing of things. Our topic this term is ‘Happily Ever After’ which is all about Traditional Tales! This is an exciting new topic for children and teachers, and we can’t wait to get started! More information can be found by clicking on the ‘Curriculum Overview’.

In English, we will be concentrating on sentence construction, the use of simple punctuation (capital letters and full stops) and using phonic knowledge to spell words. Children will be encouraged throughout the year to verbally rehearse their ideas before writing them.

In Maths, we will start by building on their experiences in Reception and children will begin to understand the place value of numbers. They will solve additions using apparatus, mental strategies, number tracks and number lines. Later in the term, we will use the same skills to solve subtraction.

In Science, children will learn about themselves and their senses.

Just like in Reception, reading is a huge focus in Year 1; therefore, please continue to support your child’s reading at home regularly. We remind you that children’s books need to be in school every day so that teachers can also listen to them read and help us to monitor their progress. This will also enable the books to be changed more regularly. However, we would still expect daily reading to happen at home. This will help to build your child’s confidence and the link between home and school. Any extra practise at home is always welcome! Your child will also bring home phonics books during the year. Please support your child by encouraging them to read the words using their phonics skills, as phonics is very important in this year group. Children may also have nonsense words to practise which are also important in helping them to read accurately. Phonics is particularly important during Year 1, as children are required to take a phonics test in the summer term, which consists of 40 words (real and nonsense) to read – we will have a parent meeting to discuss the phonics screening test in the spring term.

PE will be taught twice a week. This will be taught on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Please ensure that children have the correct PE kit on school at all times. In the interests of safety, no jewellery, including earrings, should be worn on PE days.

It would also be appreciated if all uniform (including PE kit and pumps and water bottles) could be labelled with your child’s full name and class.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher at the end of the school day or via Class Dojos. Thank you in anticipation of your continued support.

We have much excited for the Autumn Term and we look forward to a term packed full of learning and

progress.
