Welcome back after what was a very busy Spring Term! We have lots of fun learning opportunities for the children to take part in over our busy summer term.

English and Mathematics will continue to be taught daily and focus on key writing skills and mathematical calculations.

Our thematic topic for this term is ‘Light up the World’ and over the next few weeks we will be learning about the Sun and how it effects everything we do here on Earth.  The children will also be learning about light and dark colours in Art and how our moods can change and how we deal with our emotions in PSHE.

R.E will be taught discreetly. Phonics will continue to be a very important part of our daily learning. We cannot stress the importance of regular spelling practise, opportunities for daily reading with yourselves at home. There are many free online games and activities available to support your child with their phonics learning. In school, children particularly enjoy, ‘Phonics Play’ and ‘Phonics Bloom’.

For more details about our learning this term, please see the Curriculum Overview.

Please can we remind parents that no jewellery should be worn in school with the exception of stud earrings, and in line with Health and Safety guidelines these should not be worn on PE days. Children may be asked to remove earrings before PE sessions.

Year 1 PE sessions are:

Mondays and Tuesdays.

Please ensure that children have the correct PE kit in school at all times; PE kits can be purchased from the school office. As we are now in the Summer term, children can wear green shorts, a white t-shirt and black pumps, as we head into the warmer months.

Children will continue to receive Phonics based homework. As always, children will be expected to read regularly at home to support with their phonics learning. Can we also remind parents how important it is to record in your child’s home reading diary when you have heard your child read at home.  The expectation is not to read the whole book but a few pages each day.  Once the child has completed the book ask them comprehension questions about what they have read to check their understanding.  Please ensure your child’s reading book and diary are in school EVERY DAY as they are also heard in school.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher, who will usually be available at the end of each day. We anticipate a busy and exciting term ahead and we thank you in anticipation of your continued support.
