On Monday 19th October, we came together to celebrate Black History Month and recognise the contributions, achievements, cultures and histories of Black people. The children explored the work of inspirational artists, created their own artwork, learnt African dances and practised songs. We finished the day by sharing our learning and performances in special assemblies, celebrating diversity, creativity and the importance of learning from one another.

Key Stage 1 learnt about Faith Ringgold, an American artist known for her colourful story quilts. Inspired by her artwork, the children created their own pieces, combining drawings and colourful geometric patterns to frame their pictures.

Year 3 and 4 learnt about Stephen Wiltshire, a renowned British artist famous for drawing detailed cityscapes from memory. Inspired by his incredible work, the children created their own versions of his artwork, exploring detail, observation and line drawing.

Year 5 artists explored the artwork of Kehinde Wiley, an American artist known for portraying African American people in powerful, heroic poses inspired by classic European paintings. Wiley celebrates Black identity and culture by placing everyday Black men and women in positions traditionally reserved for kings, queens, and historical figures. The children then used their learning as inspiration to create their own individual pieces of artwork, showcasing their creativity and artistic skills.
