Celebrating Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas
To kick-start our learning about Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, the children enjoyed an insightful assembly delivered by Mr Maan Singh from Basics of Sikhi.
During the assembly, Mr Singh helped the children understand why Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, which means ‘The Day of Liberation’ and commemorates the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from Gwalior Fort, along with 52 wrongly imprisoned princes. The children also explored the familiar story of Rama and Sita, learning why many Hindus celebrate Diwali and how the festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil. They discovered that while Hindus celebrate Diwali, many Sikhs mark the same time of year by celebrating Bandi Chhor Divas, reflecting on themes of freedom, justice and helping others.
To conclude the assembly, Mr Singh encouraged the children to reflect on the impact that each and every one of us can have, not only on ourselves but also on those around us. He linked this message to our ethos at Goldthorn Primary School, highlighting the importance of leadership, responsibility and making positive choices that support and inspire others.
