Year 5 and 6 STEM Challenge

Children in Years 5 and 6 took part in an inspiring, hands‑on STEM workshop led by aerospace experts from Safran. Throughout the day, children stepped into the role of real engineers, applying their knowledge of forces, design, problem‑solving and teamwork across a series of exciting challenges.

One of the activities during the workshop was the marshmallow‑and‑spaghetti tower task, where pupils had to think carefully about structure, stability and height as they experimented with different engineering approaches. They also designed their own aircraft, considering features such as slipstreaming and aerodynamics to create the most efficient model.

Later, the children put their understanding of forces to the test by cushioning an astronaut’s landing and taking part in a parachute drop challenge — refining their designs to slow descent and protect their astronaut on impact.
