Year 6 Step Back in Time!

Updated: Mar 3

Last week, our Year 6 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable trip to Blists Hill Victorian Town as part of their history learning. The children spent the day exploring what life was really like in the Victorian era and were amazed at how different it was from today!

During the visit, the children met costumed Victorian characters, visited the old-fashioned bank, bakery, post office, sweet shop and chemist, and discovered how people lived and worked over 100 years ago. The children behaved brilliantly and showed great curiosity, asking thoughtful questions and making excellent links to their classroom learning. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to deepen their understanding of Victorian life and appreciate how much daily life has changed.

While there, they explored the site closely and identified a range of key physical and human features in the environment. Back in class, they used their fieldwork observations to create detailed maps of Blist Hill. As part of this work, they developed important Year 6 mapping skills, including understanding and using scale to show accurate distances, selecting and designing clear symbols for a key, and applying compass directions to describe where features are located (for example, “The river flows north‑east”). They also represented topographical features by showing both human elements such as roads, buildings and bridges, and physical features such as rivers and woodland. Throughout the task, pupils focused on accuracy and layout, keeping lines neat, labels clear, and proportions consistent to produce high‑quality, purposeful maps.
