Across school we have been learning about Bonfire Day and why it is a key Historical event in British History. We focused on Guy Fawkes and learnt about the Gunpowder Plot and why he is such a significant Historical figure.
We added this to our class timelines to identify when in History this key event took place.
We enjoyed then using this learning to create Bonfire pictures using different media.
Year 3 children delved into an exciting extract from You Wouldn’t Want to Be Guy Fawkes by Fiona Macdonald during their Whole Class Reading session. Through this text, the children discovered fascinating facts about Guy Fawkes — learning about his life, why he left England, and the purpose of gunpowder. By the end of the lesson, they clearly understood how and why Fawkes and his companions plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
To build on their learning and capture the spirit of Bonfire Night, the children created their own acrostic poems using the letters of “BONFIRE.” They chose powerful words and imagery to represent the colours, sounds, and excitement of the night sky. Later, they confidently performed their poems aloud, using expression, tone, and intonation to bring their writing to life.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to combine history, reading, and creative writing, while celebrating one of Britain’s most iconic traditions!
